This weekend may have marked the last step in what has been, I’m not going to lie to you, an arduous process. It’s hard to imagine just how much red tape surrounds everything we do until you need to try and cross over it (metaphorically) and find you can’t. There are rules governing your conduct on more or less everything you do. The bigger the task, the more rules and regulations there are going to be trying to prevent the whole thing from happening (or just slow it down considerably). When you’re trying to buy your first house, there are a whole lot of hoops you’re going to need to jump through.
Speaking completely honestly, it’s been an absolute nightmare. If you don’t have parents or a really good role model to guide you through it, I can basically guarantee you’re going to feel lost and confused throughout the majority of the process. My only saving grace has been that I had the good fortune to make a friend at uni who has contacts with a top notch conveyancer in Brighton. Believe you me, I would not have managed to wade my way through all the damned paperwork without him by my side, helping me through.
We’ve actually spent a lot of time together over the past few weeks, more than we ever did one-to-one when we were at uni, and surprisingly, a lot of our conversations come back to how amazing it would be to work for one of the top conveyancer firms. Melbourne property markets are booming right now so it’s probably best to get in before it gets too expensive.
I’ve always thought of work as a means to an end, but maybe it doesn’t have to be. I think my friend actually enjoys his job more than anybody I’ve ever met, and certainly more than I enjoy mine. Just some food for thought while I celebrate the light at the end of the tunnel.
