As we all know, sometimes the care industry is severely underfunded. There needs to be more attention and awareness of what is needed in these facilities. It goes beyond the basic needs of medicine and supplying a home. We need to make sure these facilities are safe, functional and appropriately designed. I have seen too many accidents go on in homes for elderly and disabled people due to the facilities not being properly set up. What people fail to see is that safety is an absolute bare minimum. Then we need to figure out the mental well-being of residents in care. Just because someone is in a care home, it does not mean their brain should be left to rot. Residents need mental stimulation to feel happy. At the residency I work at, I like to get to know each of our residents so I can understand their likes and dislikes, plus uncover any passions or hobbies they might have.
I went to so many board meetings trying to beg for changes and more money. At times things fell on unwilling ears, so instead I took it upon myself to find bathtub modifications for seniors. Sydney has a listing of different suppliers and contractors for care residencies. I found this one business that focuses on making bathrooms better suited to people with physical limitations. As I am someone who is passionate about making changes and helping our residents, I got in touch with this company. They were kind and came out to do a site visit. During the site visit, they evaluated our needs and let us know of the best aged-care bath modifications.
I have since made it a standard in our residency that all bathrooms have safety rails and tub cutouts to make entering and exiting a bath a lot safer and easier. All the residents are so pleased with the change and the board is finally acknowledging that there are more changes that need to happen. Finally, they’re hearing my pleas and are willing to start helping me improve the system.
